Prepare Your Home Emergency Kit

It has been six years since the 9-11 attacks, and over two years since Katrina. Still, most Americans, even those living in earthquake or hurricane zones do not have an emergency kit and "bug-out" kit prepared.

Look, I know better than anybody how tight money is these days. But can you afford not to have at least some of these items on hand?

To make it easier for you, I've taken the recommended product list, thrown in a few ideas, and searched for products to save you time. (Click on the images for more information.) I have a list of pre-built emergency kits and bug-out kits if you want to go the quick and easy route.

Please, email me your own ideas and suggestions. We are all in this together!

Also, make sure you have a plan and practice it - everyone should know what to do.

I. Water

Authorities say you should have a 3-5 day supply of water on hand in case it takes a while to get to you or get the public system working again. Figure on a gallon per person per day.

Be prepared for emergencies on land, or on the water with Mainstay engineered packaged water supplies. Sixty packets each contain 4.225 oz. /125 ml of lifesaving purified water for use in emergency and rationed survival situations. Space-efficient storage for home, auto, cabin, boat, aircraft and liferaft.
Scepter's military water cans are designed to preserve the quality of drinking water. These genuine military issue plastic water transport cans are excellent for home, camp, cabin and preparedness survival storage. They feature a screw top closure with a wide mouth for easy filling. Pouring is through a small capped opening with a venting cap for easy pouring. These store compactly and stack on top of each. Extremely durable plastic will provide years of excellent service.
The 2.5 gallon Runt is half the size of the 5 gallon standard container, which makes it lighter for greater portability. Perfect for day use. This military specification high impact plastic can will keep vital water supplies fresh and potable. Excellent for home, camp, cabin and preparedness survival storage. Can features a screw top closure with a wide mouth for easy filling. Pouring is done through a small capped opening with a venting cap for easy pouring. These store compactly and stack on top of each. Extremely durable plastic will provide years of excellent service.

II. Food

You will need 3-5 days of non-perishable food that does not require a lot of preparation. I suggest peanut butter, canned beans, canned ham, and granola bars, but that's going to get old in a hurry. Keep bread frozen in the freezer and rotate it out every week just in case. And have a good-old hand-cranked can opener on hand.

These are some of the best-tasting compressed emergency rations on the market and they provide more vitamins and minerals than any other survival food bar of its kind. Guaranteed 5-year shelf life. Each bar in the pack of 6 provides 400 calories (1,666 kj) for a total of 2,400 per foil pack. Best Buy on 10 pack case.

One of the best and quickest ways to hit the ground running with a food supply is with Meals Ready To Eat - MRE?s. These military rations are pre-cooked and preserved so that they can be eaten hot or cold as the situation dictates. Add more calories to your survival food reserves. Field Ready are priced-right MRE?s for Weather Emergencies, Peace-keeping, Exploration, Camping, Scouting, Backpacking, Travel and for stocking remote cabins or survival shelters. These new entrees are Government contract overruns. Try a single or get the 12-pack. As an ex-Marine, I've eaten c-ratsin the field, they were not that bad (especially if heated) and these are better.
Heat MRE's - Meals Ready To Eat - with the military issued flameless heater pouch. Just add water and the entre pack. In minutes, you have warmed food. Can be used for thawing and warming. Special degradable material is water activated to produce heat without flame. (This is a vast improvement over what they had in my day.)
These Entr?es have been rated as among the best tasting ones on the market! Complete compact meals for emergencies, outdoor adventures, disaster response, camping, security operations and more. MREs are precooked, eaten right out of the package in worst case situations. These include the FRH - Flameless Ration Heater - for meal heating in minutes. Single pouch. Meals average 1150 calories. Contents may vary depending on availability. Available as singles or case of 12.
One of the handiest devices ever created!. Fold flat opener lifted the tops of many a C-Rats in their day. Still ever useful for that can of camp beans or survival food. Troops wear these on a Dog tag chain for use when needed. Pack of 2 each. We called these a "John Wayne" in my day.
